The Flames have dropped a step down from position 121 to 122 out of 204 national teams which Fifa rates.

Fifa released the rankings on Thursday on www.fifa.com/worldranking/ranking table, with the Malawi slide translating to position 36 out of 54 teams in Africa.

In southern Africa, the Flames are eighth out of 14 countries with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana as the Cosafa bloc’s number one team followed in order by Zambia, Botswana, Angola, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Namibia.

Cote d’Ivoire maintain their seat as Africa’s number one side followed by Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, Nigeria in the top six rank.

Malawi’s opponents in this month’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations preliminary qualifiers, Chad, are ranked 43 in Africa and 165 in the world. The Flames drew 0-0 with Tanzania last Sunday in Mbeya. The rankings are released every month.

The Flames share position 122 with the Taifa Stars in the world. The ratings also include results of games played in the last two years and also the strength of opposition teams as well as the number of appearances in Nations Cup and World Cup finals. Spain are still the world’s number one side.

“Brazil jumped to fourth on the global ladder to become South America’s highest-placed team while Honduras returned to the top-30 for the first time in 12 years and Mauritania made a big leap,” reads www.fifa.com.
